Key result
PTMC-induced papillary muscle rupture surprisingly causes only mild-to-moderate MR in rheumatic mitral stenosis.
Why the study?
Severe regurgitation caused by papillary muscle rupture following balloon mitral valvotomy can be a delayed complication even in patients with suitable valves and low echo scores.
Case Report (n=1)
Alerts clinicians to rare papillary muscle rupture risk during PTMC despite mild-moderate MR; leaves open predictors and prevention strategies.
Mini‐Abstract We report a case of Inoue balloon mitral valvotomy in a patient with low echo score that was complicated by severe regurgitation caused by a rupture of a papillary muscle, which only became apparent the day after the procedure. Our case highlights the importance of the follow‐up of patients undergoing balloon mitral valvotomy even following a successful procedure on suitable valves.

Açar et al. (2014) conducted a case report in Rheumatic mitral stenosis (n=1). Percutaneous transvenous mitral commissurotomy (PTMC) was evaluated on Papillary muscle rupture and resulting mitral regurgitation severity.
