Key result
Insular stroke triggers Takotsubo syndrome complicated by mural thrombus and recurrent embolic stroke.
Why the study?
Tako-tsubo syndrome frequently appears soon after stroke, usually involving the insular cortex, and is believed to be a consequence rather than a cause of stroke.
Population
70-year-old woman with left middle cerebral artery stroke involving the insular cortex
Design
Case report

Alerts to possible embolic risk after insular stroke with Takotsubo features; leaves open causal pathways and need for targeted monitoring.
Case Report (n=1)
Bersano et al. (2015) conducted a case report in Stroke and Tako-tsubo syndrome (n=1). Tako-tsubo syndrome was evaluated. An initial insular stroke triggered Tako-tsubo syndrome in a 70-year-old woman, which subsequently caused a transient intracardiac mural thrombus and a further embolic stroke.
