The lattice vibrations of a layer compound having the MoS2 structure are derived using the Born-von Kármán model in the nearest-neighbours approximation for single layers. The analysis produces a set of secular equations which are solved around the Brillouin zone; the corner of the zone yields particularly interesting results. The solution is shown to be in reasonable agreement with recent experimental results.
