Key result
Interval exercise training is linked to a ~6% reduction in peak coital heart rate post-MI.
Why the study?
The effect of interval exercise training on peak coital heart rate in post myocardial infarction patients was studied to assess potential improvements in sexual function.
Population
16 men aged 46-54 post first myocardial infarction
Comparison
Exercise-trained group vs control group without training
Design
Cohort study with portable ECG recordings during coitus
Follow-up
16 weeks

Training was associated with modestly lower peak coital HR post-MI; hypothesis-generating for sexual safety benefits, needing larger trials.
Cohort (n=22)
Richard Albert Stein (1977) conducted a cohort in Post myocardial infarction (n=22). Interval exercise training program (bicycle ergometer) vs. Untrained control group was evaluated on Peak coital heart rate and maximum minute oxygen consumption (VO2max). A 16-week interval exercise training program in post-myocardial infarction patients decreased peak coital heart rate by 5.5% (127 to 120 beats/min) compared to no significant change in controls.
