California's Comprehensive Perinatal Services Program (CPSP) is a multidisciplinary prenatal care program for Medicaid eligible women. In an earlier study, we found that women who receive adequate psychosocial services, as defined by professionally developed guidelines, were two times less likely to have a preterm birth or low weight baby than were women who received inadequate services. To better understand how women receiving care from certified CPSP providers perceive and value psychosocial services, we conducted five focus groups. The information from this qualitative study is intended to improve psychosocial services for low-income women and to guide further research on the effectiveness of psychosocial services in the improvement of perinatal outcomes.
