The cell boundaries in the enveloping layer of Oryzias latipes embryos were stained with silver nitrate, and quantitative analyses were made of shape and arrangement of the individual cells at successive stages of epiboly. This provided evidence that extension of the marginal zone of the enveloping layer is accomplished mainly by rearrangement of the component cells throughout the course of epiboly, but during the latter half of epiboly longitudinal elongation of cells was also noted in the marginal zone of the enveloping layer.
