Key result
Genetically proxied GLP-1 receptor agonists are linked to ~6% higher ischemic stroke risk.
Why the study?
The relationship between novel antidiabetic drugs and ischemic stroke risk lacks consistent conclusions, necessitating causal investigation using genetic data.

A 2022 study conducted an observational in Ischemic stroke (n=440,328). Genetic variants proxying GLP1R (GLP-1 RA targets) vs. Unexposed/baseline genetic risk was evaluated on Ischemic stroke (OR 1.06, 95% CI 1.04-1.08, p=<0.001). Mendelian randomization demonstrated that genetic variants proxying GLP-1 receptor agonists were associated with an increased risk of ischemic stroke (OR 1.06).
