IMAGINAL DIAPAUSE AND GONADAL MATURATION OF MANIOLA JURTINA (LEPIDOPTERA: SATYRIDAE) FROM TUSCANY BY VALERIO SCALI Institute of Zoology and Comparative Anatomy of the University, Pisa, Italy The interesting results obtained on genetic variation in English populations of the meadow brown butterfly, Maniolajurtina (L.) (see Ford 1964) have suggested to me the possibility of extending that work by investigating this insect in Tuscany (central Italy) where continental and insular populations of the butterfly can be compared. Data obtained on spot-frequencies will be dealt with in another paper; here I wish to present some findings on reproductive biology which have emerged as a parallel line of research during three collecting seasons (1967, 1968, and 1969).
