In February the College published for the first time a set of standards for emergency surgical care, addressing a complex and often neglected area of surgery. These detailed standards, aimed at providers and commissioners, were produced by a group comprising representatives from the specialty associations, medical royal colleges and regulators, as well as patients. The guideline seeks to address the wide variation in mortality, which can vary by as much as 100% between units, as well as complication rates on a specialty-by-specialty basis.
