A calculation is made of the energy spectrum of impurity ion pairs with 3d3 configuration in crystals. The optical spectrum of these crystals is interpreted by assuming that a large part of the low‐symmetry crystalline field acts on the impurity ion; the electric‐dipole interaction being taken into account. The case of ruby (Cr3+:Al2O3) is treated in detail as an example. The results are compared with experimental data.
