The pentamethylcyclopentadienyl derivatives, (Me 5 c 5 ) 2 Yb(0 2 CR) where R is Me 3 C or CF 3 , (Me 5 c 5 ) 2 Yb(S 2 CNEt 2 ) and (Me 5 c 5 ) 2 Nd(S 2 CNEt 2 ) have been prepared by metathetical exchange reactions on the anionic species, [(Me 5 c 5 ) 2 Mc1 2 ~-.The crystal structure of O~e 5 c 5 ) 2 Yb(S 2 CNEt 2 ) has been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction methods.The crystals are monoclinic, C2/c, with cell dimensions a = 12.268(4) A,~= 15.536(6) A, ~~ 14.269(5) A, B = 105.23(3)0 and V = 2624 A 3 .For Z = 4 the calculated density is 1.14 g/cm 3 .The structure was refined to a conventional R factor of 0.039 using 2179 data where F 2 > 3cr(F 2 ).The Yb(III) atom is bonded to two sulfur atoms and to two pentamethylcyclopentadienyl This work was.
