A clinical isolate of Escherichia coli which was resistant to the disinfectant formaldehyde was investigated.The strain harboured a plasmid of 62 MDa size.It was shown by conjugation, transformation and plasmid-curing experiments that the formaldehyde resistance is plasmid-mediated and transferable to other strains.
