An in situ continuous culturing system requiring no external power source, put in a pond or lake, draws in either unaltered or automatically filtered water and passes a continuous flow through submerged culture chambers into collection chambers having a system for automatic preservation of the sample. Attached reservoirs allow the addition of nutrients or toxins, and a variety of other perturbations may be simulated by slight changes in the basic device. Such a device can also be used as a continuous water sampler with the automatic preservation system.
