SUMMARY In 51 cases of water deprivation in swine, serum and cerebrospinal fluid (csf) samples were collected within 10 minutes after death had occurred. In normal swine, sodium content characteristically was slightly less in csf than in serum. In contrast, water-deprived swine had increased concentrations of serum sodium and csf sodium, and sodium content was characteristically higher in csf than in serum.
