Volunteer men alcoholics with similar drinking histories showed unpredicted drinking behavior during a 6-week inpatient program which permitted up to 2 oz of ethanol per hour. Initial scores on self-esteem, discomfort, and sleeping problems failed to distinguish between those who would be heavy, moderate, or nondrinkers (about 33% in each group), but scores on these variables during the program did differentiate the groups. At 6-month follow-up of 92%, 70% were drinking in moderation.
