Key points Reviewers should carefully consider suggesting citations, particularly to their own work. I compile a typology of potentially coercive forms of citation suggestions. Authors should not feel compelled to cite inappropriate sources or sources for inappropriate reasons. Six guiding principles for managing Reviewer Citation Suggestions (RCSs) are proposed.
