Despite the environmental and health implications of using solid energy, households in rural areas have not transitioned to clean cooking fuel. This paper studies the extent and determinants of adoption and utilisation of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) among rural households of Kano State, Nigeria. The data were sourced from a household survey by administering a questionnaire to 500 rural households. The study employed the binary logit regression model and Tobit regression model for estimating the determinants of LPG adoption and LPG utilisation, respectively. The results of the regressions show that there is a strong association between LPG adoption and household socioeconomic status. Moreover, education and income level were the major influencers of LPG adoption and utilisation. Therefore, solid fuel is the predominant source of cooking energy in rural households. The study recommends that policy interventions ensure the inclusive transition to modern cooking energy (LPG).
