The essential amino acids of the freshwater shrimp, Macrobrachium ohione were identified by radioactive assay using U‐14C‐glucose. Those amino acids which incorporated little or no 14C were arginine, histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tyrosine, and valine. It was inferred that Macrobrachium ohione could not synthesize these amino acids and thus, has a dietary requirement for them.
