Cyhexatin efficacy was improved when organotin selection pressure to a resistant population of Tetranychus urticae Koch from southern Oregon pear was reduced by substitution of an acaricide to which the mites were not cross-resistant. Abamectin (avermectin Bl) was applied in 1984 and 1985 to a block in an orchard shown to have cyhexatin resistant mites in 1983. In 1986 and 1987, the block treated with abamectin (reversion block) and a block that had received cyhexatin in 1984 and 1985 (standard treatment block) were divided into subplots and treated with cyhexatin. Better efficacy was achieved with cyhexatin in 1986 and 1987 in the block treated with abamectin than the block treated with cyhexatin. These results suggest an operational mechanism by which organotin resistance in T. urticae can be managed.
