This short review highlights recent advances in transmembrane anion transport, with a focus on discrete molecular carriers and their biomedical applications. Alongside new carriers for fluoride and phosphate transport, advances in photoswitchable transport systems and nucleotide, lactate and carboxylate-containing drug transport are featured. Progress using anion transporters as antimicrobial agents, anticancer agents and for the treatment of channelopathies such as cystic fibrosis is also discussed.
