Polarization of β ‐ and γ ‐ MnO 2 is measured at various constant currents in 9 M KOH and KOD electrolytes in reduction from MnO 2 to Mn ( OH ) 2 . Two limiting currents are observed in high‐current discharges of γ ‐ MnO 2 , one around MnO 1.75 and the other after MnO 1.5 . The former is attributed to formation of a lower oxide structure on the surface of γ ‐ MnO 2 structure. Around MnO 1.9 , a Tafel relation is observed for γ ‐ MnO 2 and i 0 values are obtained. The polarization is always greater in 9 M KOD than in 9 M KOH under the same discharge conditions.
