A scanning (1180-1680 A) spectrometer has been used on trans-Earth coast to observe dark high-galactic-latitude regions of the sky. Difficulties with instrumentally scattered solar-system La are overcome, and the intensity and spectrum of the cosmic far-ultraviolet background have been obtained. The result is consistent with models for the radiation field expected from a hot, dense intergalactic plasma. Other possible origins for the radiation field are discussed. Subject headings: cosmology - galaxies: Milky Way - ultraviolet: spectra
