Key result
Post-cardiac surgery exercise training linked to ~18% higher maximal oxygen uptake.
Why the study?
The effect of physical training on exercise tolerance and muscle strength in patients after cardiac surgery was investigated to evaluate its clinical benefit.
Cohort (n=27)
Open-label
No
May improve aerobic capacity after cardiac surgery; hypothesis-generating and requires randomized confirmation before changing practice.

Kohji Toyomasu (1993) conducted a cohort in Post-cardiac surgery (valvular heart disease and coronary heart disease) (n=27). Physical training vs. No physical training was evaluated on Maximal oxygen uptake (VO2 max) (p=<0.05). Physical training after cardiac surgery significantly increased maximal oxygen uptake by 16% in patients with valvular heart disease and by 12% in patients with coronary heart disease.
