By utilising a simple cylindrical geometry and miniaturising dimensions of all components (anode, field tubes and cavity) so that absolute gas pressures are maintained at > 0.5 kPa (4 Torr) at the smallest simulated size (5 nm) it is demonstrated that the low pressure proportional counter can be made to operate in a proportional mode with adequate gain and resolution to measure single event spectra.
