The observed signs and relative magnitudes of the intensity parameters yielding good reproduction of experimental intensity distributions, as determined in the preceding paper, are shown to accord consistently with chemical and bonding features throughout the twelve tetrahedral and trigonal bipyramidal chromophores. An understanding of the intensity parameters is developed first from a qualitative viewpoint and then confirmed and developed within a semi-quantitative structure. The relationships between ligand-field and intensity parameters are discussed, particular emphasis being placed on the utility of the latter as probes of the polarity of the bond orbitals in complexes.
