A displacement transducer with a 210 MHz split reentrant cavity has been developed. By converting the deformation of the cavity into frequency modulation of the RF oscillation, the sensitivity of 7×10 -16 m Hz -1/2 is obtained at 145 Hz. By use of this system, the room temperature Brownian motion of an aluminum plate of reduced mass 280 kg is observed 24 dB above the noise background with a time constant of 3 sec. A higher sensitivity is expected for this type of transducer with a superconducting cavity, which would be useful in cryogenic gravitational radiation experiments.
