An experimental study was made of the properties of the approximately two-dimensional flow in a rectangular cavity adjacent to a uniform stream in order to determine the principal mechanisms controlling the transport processes between the cavity and the stream. It was found that an important fraction of the transport depended on a three-dimensional effect not usually included when constructing analyzable models of this flow. This three-dimensional effect was a strong function of the cavity geometry. Several different types of flow could be identified.
