To date, there has been no systematic and precise method for measuring soil damping both domestically and abroad. This study proposes using a box-soil structure in conjunction with a Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) to experimentally assess the damping loss factor of both the box-soil structure and the empty box. Concurrently, finite element software was employed to compute the strain energy of the soil and the box independently. This information facilitated the extraction of the soil's damping value, yielding an innovative and straightforward testing method for soil damping. The study also presents an experimental approach to systematically research soil damping patterns and contrasts this with conventional triaxial dynamic testing. The comparison affirmed the viability of this new technique. During tests where dynamic shear strain, γ, ranged between 1E-4 and 1E-3, the damping ratio λ of the soil sample in the experiment varied between 0.08 and 0.3. These findings align closely with results from traditional testing methodologies. Additionally, the trend of λ increasing with γ also conforms to conventional testing patterns.
