Does daily administration of celery leaf decoction reduce blood pressure and symptoms in a patient with hypertension?
The administration of 250 ml/day of celery leaf decoction, combined with nursing care, was associated with a clinically significant reduction in blood pressure and symptom improvement in a single patient with hypertension.
Hypertension is a health issue requiring both pharmacological and non-pharmacological management to prevent cardiovascular complications. One complementary therapy option is a decoction of celery leaves (Apium graveolens), which contains apiin, apigenin, flavonoids, and potassium compounds with the potential to help lower blood pressure. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of administering celery leaf decoction in reducing blood pressure among hypertensive patients in the working area of the Maccini Sawah Community Health Center (Puskesmas). A case report method utilizing a nursing care approach for a single hypertensive patient was employed. Assessment covered the patient's complaints, history of hypertension, vital signs, and blood pressure. The intervention involved administering 250 ml of celery leaf decoction daily, alongside monitoring the patient's condition and blood pressure. Implementation took place on April 8 and 10, 2025. Initial assessment results showed a blood pressure of 180/97 mmHg, with complaints of chest pain and a headache rated at a pain scale of 4. Following the intervention, the patient exhibited a positive response, reporting greater comfort and relaxation as well as a reduction in symptoms. Celery leaf decoction demonstrated a positive effect in helping to lower blood pressure in patients with mild to moderate hypertension. Administering celery leaf decoction can serve as a complementary therapy, provided that the patient's condition and prescribed medical treatments are taken into account.
