NMR spectroscopy is now a practical tool for analyzing myocardial biochemistry and structure. The technical aspects of performing biochemical measurements on the heart, as well as the information that can be obtained from various magnetic nuclides, are reviewed in this article. Special consideration is given to turnover of labelled compounds, cardiac energetics, and models of ischemic heart disease.
