: The “impossible triangle” of energetic materials, which demands the simultaneous achievement of high energy, low sensitivity, and thermal stability, has been challenged by TYX-3, a zwitterionic fused-ring compound that rivals HMX in detonation performance and matches TATB in insensitivity (decomposition temperature 365°C). However, its solvent-free crystal structure, essential for understanding this unprecedented synergy, has remained unknown. Herein, we report the first solvent-free single-crystal structure of TYX-3, which we identify as the α polymorph ( α -TYX-3). It crystallizes in P —1 with layered packing and a void volume of only 6.9%. Multiscale analyses reveal that stability arises from cooperative N–H···N/O hydrogen bonds, face-to-face π-π stacking, and strong dispersion forces (intralayer 67.3 kJ mol -1 ) acting as a molecular shock absorber. The asymmetric nitro-amino substitution creates a charge-separated electronic structure that templates a robust hydrogen-bond network while global π-delocalization stabilizes the framework. Variable-temperature FTIR spectroscopy uncovers a stepwise “nitro-initiation, amino-buffered” decomposition pathway, and laser ignition experiments confirm faster ignition than HMX with a mild, sustained combustion contrasting CL-20. This work provides the long-missing structural basis for TYX-3’s performance and delivers a design strategy based on the precise orchestration of noncovalent forces in a densely packed, charge-separated architecture, thereby transcending the impossible triangle.
