This review examines published data on gas adsorption in Mg-MOF-74 and the relationship between its structural features and adsorption performance. The roles of open magnesium sites, equilibrium CO2 uptake, gas mixture separation, and the effects of water vapor on active site accessibility are analyzed. Application prospects are shown to depend on the combined effects of selectivity, working capacity, regenerability, and framework stability over repeated adsorption-desorption cycles. Directions for developing effective adsorbents and mixed-matrix membranes for selective carbon dioxide capture are discussed.
