The paper presents one of the necessary steps towards a taxonomic revision of the holoparasitic genus Balanophora in Vietnam. Here, previous contradictory evidence regarding B. abbreviata in the country is analyzed; a recent finding of the species in Son La Province is reported, and its presence in the flora of Vietnam is thus confirmed for the first time through specimen examination. For the purpose of its easier recognition, structural differences of B. abbreviata from the other species of the genus are briefly outlined, and analytical photographs of the studied plants in living state are provided.
