This paper considers the main approaches to the synthesis of the metal-organic framework Ni-MOF-74, Ni2(dobdc), which is built from nickel(II) ions and the 2,5-dioxido-1,4-benzenedicarboxylate linker. The influence of solvent composition, reagent ratio, temperature, reaction time, and the method of heating on crystallinity, particle size, and phase purity is discussed. Particular attention is paid to the activation step, which removes coordinated solvent molecules and makes the open nickel sites accessible. The need to combine several characterization techniques in order to confirm the quality of the synthesized material is emphasized.
