This is an edited version of a keynote address delivered The Centre for Asian Studies in Africa Annual Symposium 2025, “Engaging Stuart Hall in the Global South”, held at the University of Pretoria, 29–31 October. For the host’s engaging overview of the conference, see: https://www.ppesydney.net/stuart-hall-and-us-in-the-global-south/. A second engagement with the symposium is that offered by Keyan Tomaselli (Citation2026), while Michael Chapman (in 1997) had first discussed the issue of hemispherical naming in the pages of Critical Arts. Though Critical Arts does not normally publish conference papers, Chen’s self-reflexive essay is carried in the spirit of dialogue and critique of some taken-for-granted concepts that deserve greater critical examination and historical situatedness when discussions of Hall’s work occur.
