To address the poor mechanical properties of polyvinyl butyral (PVB) and to deepen the understanding of the reinforcement mechanisms of nano materials in polymer matrices, this study reinforced PVB with a two‐dimensional (2D) nano‐organofunctionalized Montmorillonite (OMMT). To achieve proper performance of MMT in PVB, the MMT was functionalized using cocamidopropyl Betaine (CPB) and γ ‐(2, 3‐epoxypropoxy) propyl trimethoxy silane (KH560). By the method of in situ synthesis, the PVB/OMMT nanocomposites were prepared. The glass transition temperature ( T g ) of the PVB/OMMT‐0.30 resin was ~71°C, higher than that of neat PVB (~65°C). The PVB/OMMT‐0.20 nanocomposite film exhibited the highest tensile strength, right‐angle tear strength and max 180° peel strength against glass, together with a lower strain to failure, and it survived a falling‐ball impact without penetration. Rheological analysis confirmed that the storage and loss moduli of the matrix were improved, with PVB/OMMT‐0.20 showing the highest values. This work elucidates the effect of 2D nano‐OMMT on the performance of PVB resins and films and provides theoretical insight and technical guidance for the design and optimization of high‐performance PVB‐based composites.
