This article provides a comprehensive summary of the concept and structure of smart sensor systems. The basic concept of smart sensor systems, which involve a sensing element with processing capabilities provided by a microprocessor, is presented. Two major advances in smart sensor systems are discussed, namely that important data can be provided to the user with increased reliability and integrity, and the development of a new generation of reprogrammable smart sensors networks. This article also discusses the components of a smart sensor system and presents ideas about low powered sensor elements, batteries or energy harvesting strategies and wireless communications can be used in a smart sensor system. Some examples and future applications of smart sensor systems are also provided.
