Why the study?
More than 90% of children with familial hypercholesterolemia remain undiagnosed, and early detection is essential for timely treatment and prevention of cardiovascular disease.
An open-access online tool for the Familial Hypercholesterolemia Pediatric Diagnostic Score (FH-PeDS) has been developed to facilitate early clinical diagnosis of FH in children.
Supports routine pediatric FH screening to close diagnostic gaps; extends validated FH-PeDS criteria into accessible clinical practice.
More than 90% of children with familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) remain undiagnosed. Early detection is essential for timely initiation of lipid-lowering therapy and long-term prevention of cardiovascular disease. Genetic testing is the gold standard for diagnosing FH; however, because it is not yet universally available, clinical diagnostic criteria are widely used. The recently developed Familial Hypercholesterolemia Pediatric Diagnostic Score (FH-PeDS) appears to provide greater diagnostic accuracy compared with traditional clinical scoring systems and was recognized by the recent European Atherosclerosis Society consensus statement on FH in children and adolescents as a promising tool for pediatric FH detection. FH-PeDS is now available online at https://fh-peds.eu for rapid assessment of the likelihood of FH.

Šikonja et al. (2026) studied Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) in children. Familial Hypercholesterolemia Pediatric Diagnostic Score (FH-PeDS) online tool was evaluated. The Familial Hypercholesterolemia Pediatric Diagnostic Score (FH-PeDS) is now available as an open-access online tool for rapid assessment of the likelihood of pediatric FH.
