AbstractPathogenesis of many different chronic diseases like Cardiovascular disorders, Diabetics,Neurodegenerative disease, Cancer etc is associated with phenomenon of oxidative stress whichis a condition that is caused due to imbalance between generation of reactive oxygen species(ROS) and endogenous antioxidant defense. In this context, sustainable, environmentallyfriendly components and cost-effective antioxidants attracted interest, and of agro-industrial byproducts, pistachio shells appear as an underutilized but rich source of polyphenols wasteproduct. PSE contains high amount of phenolic acids, flavonoids, anthocyanins and condensedtannins but displays a strong radical scavenging effect and metal chelating and reducing power. It was found that ascorbic acid, a water-soluble and well-known antioxidant vitamin, hadcomplementary mechanisms of action and has been shown to regenerate oxidised polyphenolicspecies, therefore, forming a synergistic antioxidant system when given together withpolyphenols from plants. Aims to bring existing scientific information, concerningphytochemical content, methods of extraction, and antioxidant evaluation of PSE together andreview rationale behind and evidence and challenges being inherent in use of PSE along withascorbic acid. Available evidence supports PSE combined with ascorbic acid as a promising, sustainable platform for development of natural antioxidant therapeutics, althoughstandardization, large-scale clinical validation,-formulation modification remain vital forsuccessful translation into market-ready pharmaceutical products.
