School- and community-based CPR and AED education empowers adolescents to improve sudden cardiac arrest survival.
Why the study?
Awareness of sudden cardiac arrest among adolescents remains limited, leading to delayed recognition and response during emergencies.
Integrating CPR and AED awareness into school and community programs is essential to empower adolescents as first responders and improve survival outcomes for sudden cardiac arrest.
Supports school-based CPR/AED training; leaves open effects on adolescent bystander response and SCA survival.
Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is a critical medical emergency that can occur without warning and requires immediate intervention to prevent death. Despite its severity, awareness of SCA among adolescents remains limited, often leading to delayed recognition and response during emergencies. This research, When Every Second Counts: Awareness of Sudden Cardiac Arrest Among Adolescents, examines the current level of knowledge among young people regarding SCA, its causes, risk factors, warning signs, and the distinction between sudden cardiac arrest and a heart attack. The study also explores the importance of early emergency response, including the timely activation of emergency medical services, the role of bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and the use of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs). In addition, it addresses common myths and misconceptions that may prevent individuals from taking life-saving action. By reviewing scientific literature and emphasizing the value of education and preparedness, this research highlights the need to integrate CPR and AED awareness into schools and community programs. The ultimate goal is to encourage adolescents to become informed and confident first responders, thereby improving survival outcomes and reducing preventable deaths caused by sudden cardiac arrest.
