Scoping review protocol outlines predictors of cardiac rehabilitation adherence and outcomes in older adults.
Why the study?
Cardiac rehabilitation reduces mortality and improves function in cardiovascular disease but remains underused by older adults, and predictors across the full pathway have not been mapped specifically in this population.
What are the predictors of participation, adherence, and outcomes of cardiac rehabilitation in older adults?
What are the predictors of participation, adherence, and outcomes of cardiac rehabilitation in older adults?
This protocol outlines a scoping review to map the evidence base and identify gaps regarding predictors of cardiac rehabilitation participation, adherence, and outcomes in older adults.
Guides targeted efforts to improve cardiac rehabilitation in older adults; leaves open critical gaps for future systematic reviews.
This registration documents the protocol for a scoping review mapping predictors of cardiac rehabilitation in older adults. Cardiac rehabilitation reduces mortality and improves function in cardiovascular disease, yet remains underused by older adults. Existing reviews address either access (participation and adherence) in general populations or frailty within cardiac rehabilitation, but none maps predictors across the full pathway, from referral through to outcomes, specifically in older adults. Following the JBI methodology and the PRISMA-ScR reporting guideline, the review charts factors associated with three domains: participation and enrolment, adherence and completion, and functional, clinical and patient-reported outcomes. Eligibility is framed using the Population, Concept, Context (PCC) approach. Sources are identified primarily through freely accessible databases (MEDLINE via PubMed, the Cochrane Library, Europe PMC and DOAJ), with grey literature and citation searching; paywalled full texts are obtained through indirect institutional access. The review aims to define the current evidence base and identify gaps to inform a future systematic review.

Sendrowski et al. (2026) conducted a review in Cardiovascular disease. Predictors of cardiac rehabilitation was evaluated on Participation, enrolment, adherence, completion, and outcomes of cardiac rehabilitation. This is a protocol for a scoping review mapping predictors of cardiac rehabilitation participation, adherence, and outcomes in older adults.
