Why the study?
The underlying metabolic signature of individual Life's Essential 8 metrics and their association with adverse cardiovascular events is less known.
Does a metabolite-based predictor of chronological age (metAge) independently predict atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and major adverse events in adults?
Cohort (n=1,218)
No
Does a metabolite-based predictor of chronological age (metAge) independently predict atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and major adverse events in adults?
A metabolomic profile of biological age (metAge) provides prognostic value for incident ASCVD and major adverse events in older adults beyond traditional risk factors and Life's Essential 8 metrics.
Background: Life's Essential 8 (LE8) is an American Heart Association framework of modifiable behaviors and factors for measuring cardiovascular health. However, the underlying metabolic signature of individual LE8 metrics is less known. The purpose of this study is to identify the metabolites associated with all 8 components of LE8 and evaluate association with adverse cardiovascular events. Methods: Age and ASCVD or major adverse events (MAE). Findings: Age. Interpretation: Age was independently associated with ASCVD and MAE than many LE8 variables in older adults.

Pollack et al. (2026) conducted a cohort in Cardiovascular disease risk (n=1,218). Accelerated metabolomic age (metAge) vs. Lower accelerated metAge (chronological age) was evaluated on Composite of ASCVD mortality and nonfatal ASCVD events (nonfatal MI, acute ischemic syndrome, coronary revascularization) (HR 1.12, 95% CI 1.00-1.26, p=two-sided p = 0.0598; prespecified one-sided p = 0.030).
