Spontaneous 0.3-Hz breathing drives coupling between respiratory neural activity and slower 0.1-Hz cardiovascular oscillations.
Observational (n=23)

Pfurtscheller et al. (2026) conducted an observational in Healthy (n=23). Spontaneous autonomous breathing (~0.3 Hz) vs. Unexposed / Non-fictive respiration states (conceptual) was evaluated on Directed information flow (Directed Transfer Function) between fictive respiration, BOLD signals, and RR intervals in the 0.05-0.15 Hz frequency band. Spontaneous autonomous 0.3-Hz breathing acts as a central driving process that couples respiratory-related neural activity with slower 0.1-Hz cardiovascular and hemodynamic oscillations.
