Intravenous adenosine restores sinus rhythm and drops heart rate by ~76 bpm in pediatric SVT.
Why the study?
Treatment strategies for supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) in children require discussion and clarification.
Case Report (n=1)
No
Adenosine may terminate SVT in infants; this single case leaves open need for controlled pediatric trials.
A one and half year old child presented with lethargy and unwilling to take food for 2 days. He had history of unusual cry with a history of pneumonia 2 month back. After getting high heart rate on auscultation, a 12 lead ECG was done and diagnosed as a case of supra ventricular tachycardia (SVT). He was managed by using injection adenosine intravenously by which he was reverted to sinus rhythm. In this case, the treatment strategies of SVT in children will be discussed with other option also. Bhattacharjee et al. (2012) conducted a case report in Supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) (n=1). Adenosine was evaluated on Restoration of normal sinus rhythm. Intravenous adenosine (1 mg bolus) successfully restored normal sinus rhythm and reduced the heart rate from 214 bpm to 138 bpm in a 1.5-year-old infant with supraventricular tachycardia.
