This paper argues that Nietzsche’s genealogy as critique involves two different critical elements – a conceptual-cum-affective element and a functional element – where the former is concerned with cultivating the conditions of receptivity and the latter addressing the question of the value of morality. It offers an account of how Nietzsche attempts to cultivate a need in his audience that opens up receptivity to the question about the value of morality that he is posing, before turning to sketch an account of how Nietzsche addresses the question of the value of morality in functional terms.
