Women who articulate movements and organizations, building networks of solidarity and mutual support, stand out in contemporary society. They employ various strategies and forms of action, including public demonstrations, occupying spaces, producing knowledge, political advocacy, awareness campaigns, among other forms of collective mobilization. However, they face significant challenges, such as lack of recognition, the invisibility of their agendas, physical and symbolic violence, political persecution and marginalization. This study assessed the profile of social activists, with special attention to women of great influence, against the backdrop of the life and work of Raimunda, the coconut breaker from the state of Maranhão. The results indicate that the coconut breakers' movement has a considerable impact on maintaining the local ecosystem, as well as promoting sustainability, while the participants fight for their rights and the preservation of their cultures. In addition, the female force present in this movement challenges gender norms by engaging in multifaceted activities, engaging in a wide range of causes. These causes cover issues such as reproductive rights, gender-based violence, pay equity, political representation, social inclusion and the preservation of the cultures and traditions of their people.
