Cleft lip deformity is the most common birth defect, characterized by failure of the union of the medial nasal process and maxillary prominence. A variable range of cleft lips could be unilateral or bilateral, complete or incomplete, cleft lip with or without cleft palate. Diagnosis of a cleft lip is typically made through clinical examinations. Surgical repair is the ultimate management of cleft lips, which restores their normal appearance. Repairing a cleft lip could be associated with certain complications, including infection, dehiscence, notching, and post-op hypertrophic scarring. Nevertheless, infection can occur after cleft lip repair surgery, but infection with Serratia marcescens is typically uncommon.
