We report spectral types for over 300 stars selected as candidate hot subdwarf stars and shown to be variable by data from the Terrestrial Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). Atmospheric parameters determined from low dispersion spectrograms are provided for many of the targets. In our sample, we find 164 sdB stars, 77 sdB binaries, 21 cataclysmic variables, and small numbers of main sequence, white dwarf, sdO, sdOB and intermediate helium rich subdwarf stars. Several stars appear rather peculiar and are discussed in more detail; TIC 360220395, for example, appears to be an old planetary nebula nucleus.
