We demonstrated heritable variability of injury response to chilling of imbibing seeds of Gossypium hirsutum L. Response to chilling of imbibing seed from reciprocal crosses of chilling‐tolerant and sensitive genetic lines was dependent upon the maternal parent. If the maternal parent of a cross is chilling‐susceptible, the F1 embryo was also susceptible.
