The discovery of a lead ingot near Wrexham in 2019 prompted an investigation into Roman activity in the surrounding area, leading to the identification of the first structurally attested Roman villa rustica in north Wales. In a region where evidence for rural settlement and agriculture has long been eclipsed by military and industrial remains, this find raises new questions about everyday life under Roman rule. This paper presents interim details of the discoveries, offering the first published account of the villa, and explores their significance for understanding rural settlement along Britannia’s western frontier. It outlines the fieldwork results, reviews existing evidence and identifies key research priorities and methodological recommendations for future study.
